Start Date

End Date

Description
The historical development of adult education literature has both ignored people of African ancestry and has failed to recognize educational programs designed by and for people of African descent. Among the least-discussed innovators of Africentric education was Arturo (Arthur) Alfonso Schomburg. The research emphasis of this presentation suggests that Schomburg pioneered an educational paradigm which heightened race consciousness and reawakened Africans to their long-repressed past via multidimensional approaches, which lives on in his legacy institution, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (SCRBC). The Center currently offers a variety of educational platforms, and is continuing to redefine adult education in the 21st century. The session will review and demonstrate former and current adult education programs at SCRBC. Discussion will follow.
