Abstract
This study explored the lived experiences of Black gay men that have attended or were currently attending an Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Virtual interviews were conducted with 12 Black gay men, of varying ages, from six different HBCUs. Each participant was asked 13 open-ended questions designed to inform the research questions. The analysis of the participants’ responses indicated that the climate on the HBCU campus is shifting to be more inclusive of Black gay men compared to 20-30 years ago. The responses suggested that Black gay men have learned to navigate the campuses with minimal support from administration and other institutional leaders. The data support the need for HBCU leaders to improve the climate for Black gay men. Additionally, the participants offered recommendations that leadership should implement to demonstrate more intentional support of Black gay men in their care, on their campuses.
